Bread for the City

Mission

The mission of Bread for the City is to help Washington, DC residents living with low income to develop their power to determine the future of their own communities. We provide food, clothing, medical care, and legal and social services to reduce the burden of poverty. We seek justice through community organizing and public advocacy. We work to uproot racism, a major cause of poverty. We are committed to treating our clients with the dignity and respect that all people deserve.

Vision

At Bread for the City, we share a vision of Washington, DC as a nurturing community, where all residents have access to the basic material resources they need for survival and growth, and the prosperity of their social, emotional, and spiritual lives.

Northwest Food Pantry

Closed
Each month, Bread for the City’s two food pantries provide nutritious groceries — including fresh fruits, vegetables, and meats — to nearly 11,000 clients. Two monthly Farmers Markets offer fresh produce to the community at large, and as a Grocery Plus distribution site, Bread for the City offers an additional 30 lb box of food to seniors.

Grocery Plus for Senior Citizens: SE Distribution Center

Bread for the City participates in the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) within the District of Columbia. The programs provide seniors with free, nutritious food so they can stay healthy and active. Each month, income-eligible seniors over 60 receive 30 to 40 pounds of healthy groceries that they can use to prepare the nutritious meals they need to live well.

Diaper Program

Closed
Bread for the City distributes diapers each month. In addition, our baby pantry often stocks pull-ups, cereal, bottles, baby wipes, formula, hygiene packets, and other items that support new parents.

Workforce Development Program

By Registration Closed
Bread for the City’s Workforce Development Program works closely with unemployed and underemployed clients by providing a continuum of life management and job readiness training services that are individualized, holistic and goal specific. The program helps BFC clients develop the skills necessary to secure and retain employment through a four-tiered approach: job readiness workshops, case management, life skills coaching, and job placement.
